World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning while attempting to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, where this week’s PGA Championship is being held. Traffic outside the golf course had been halted after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the event, reported that Scheffler tried to navigate around the crash scene by driving on a median. Despite a police officer’s instruction to stop, Scheffler continued driving approximately 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance. When he finally stopped he was cuffed and detained by LMPD.
Scheffler, 27, had recently won four of his last five tournaments, including his second major championship at the Masters in April. He was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET.
PGA of America officials announced that play would begin at 8:35 a.m. ET, delayed from the originally scheduled 7:15 a.m. ET start for the second round.
